Information on Current School Conditions:
There are low expectations from parents for student performance (evidence from school parent survey). One of the most common comments reported on the survery from parents is that their children will probably work in the mill as their parents and grandparents did before them.
There are low expectations from teachers for student performance (evidence from school climate survey). One of the most common comments reported on the survey from teachers is "what do you expect, we can't keep up with the student performance they have a Beach-Side High School".
The school staff does not have a great deal of confidence or trust in the new principal. The new principal was hired by the Superintendent with limited involvement of the Intercoastal High School staff.
Student behavior issues have been a constant challenge, with over 5,000 referrals made to the office each of the past three years.
Suspensions have significantly risen over the past three years.
Incidents of student behavior are widely spread over the student population. Student gangs have begun to form along racial lines.
There has been an increase in the incidents of bullying.
The issue of safety is a major concern with teachers and support staff, as a significant number of suspensions has been for drugs and fights, mostly among female students.
There is a limited integration of technology. New computers, LCD projectors, White Boards and Sudio-enhancement equipment have been purchased and installed, but very little is actually being used in the classrooms. The textbook and worksheets seem to be the instuctional mainstay.
Currently the high school does not have formal subject area or grade level curriculum of courses of study.
Due to major budget cuts over the past three years, all advanced placement courses have been eliminated, as has the schools AVID and ROTC programs.
